Setting up requires a fixed amount of human intervention which carries a fixed cost regardless of how many badges are to be embroidered. This work includes checking and uploading the electronic artwork, ensuring that the embroidery machines are loaded with the right colours and type of threads, and getting the backing material ready.

Thereafter the cost per badge are fairly linear as each one takes the same amount of time, effort and materials.

The upshot is that for common sense reasons, embroiderers tend to set a minimum order quantity - otherwise the price per badge would need to be prohibitive.
